Situation

Arkansas State University is located on 1,000 acres in Jonesboro, Arkansas, and has a student population of over 14,000. In 2002, the campus had five different building automation systems. To compound the issue, the controllers which occupied nearly 80% of the buildings were deemed obsolete by the manufacturer just two years after being installed. This made it nearly impossible to sustain the existing system. It was at this time that the Arkansas State Facilities Team began their search for a BAS solution which their in-house engineers could manage and planned obsolescence would not be an issue going forward.

Approach

Computrols first installation was a challenging project, putting a VAV system on a DX air conditioning system at a newly renovated annex building. The Computrols team stayed on site for an extra week ensuring everything was working properly and training the ASU staff on how to install and operate the system. After a short time using Computrols Building Automation Software (CBAS), the in-house team was able to program their own sequence of operations, adjust schedules, and easily navigate the system. Given this success, ASU began purging the campus of all other equipment and installing Computrols building by building.

Result

Today, the campus has grown by nearly 1.5 million square feet from the time of the first Computrols installation. You can find Computrols lifetime warranty controllers in over 90% of ASU’s facilities which were installed and programmed by ASU’s in-house staff. The system now consists of over 52,000 hardware and software points across 250+ controllers and 800+ VAVs. The ASU facilities team has been able to maintain a comfortable environment for the students and faculty and now simply orders new controllers from Computrols.
