To be able to manage their building automation system with their in-house staff and not have to be concerned with planned obsolescence.

Decision Drivers

The campus had five different building automation systems, many of which had been deemed obsolete by the manufacturer, making the campus very difficult to monitor and control.

Installation Date

2003 – Present

Arkansas State University is located on 1,000 acres in Jonesboro, Arkansas and has a student population of over 14,000. In 2002, the campus had five different building automation systems including Honeywell, Siemens, Johnson Controls, KMC, and Trane. Each manufacturer had its own head-end software making it very difficult to keep track of and control the HVAC in all of the various buildings throughout the campus. To compound the issue, the Honeywell controllers which occupied nearly 80% of the buildings were deemed obsolete by the manufacturer just two years after being installed. This made it nearly impossible to sustain the existing system. The facilities staff was forced to send the boards to repair shops that would resolder the chips until the chips were also deemed obsolete.

In 2002, the facilities team at ASU began searching for a building automation solution that would allow them to operate and maintain their system in-house. They vetted six different vendors and chose Computrols because they provided a lifetime warranty on everything they manufactured and the software was simple enough to be programmed by their facilities department.

Computrols first installation was a challenging project, putting a VAV system on a DX air conditioning system at a newly renovated annex building. The Computrols team stayed on site for an extra week ensuring everything was working properly and training the ASU staff on how to install and operate the system. After a short time using Computrols Building Automation Software (CBAS), the in-house team was able to program their own sequence of operations, adjust schedules, and easily navigate the system. Given this success, ASU began purging the campus of all other equipment and installing Computrols building by building.

Today, the campus has grown by nearly one million square feet from the time of the first Computrols installation. You can find Computrols lifetime warranty controllers in over 90% of ASU’s facilities which were installed and programmed by ASU’s in-house staff. The system now consists of over 52,000 hardware and software points across 250+ controllers and 800+ VAVs. The ASU facilities team has been able to maintain a comfortable environment for the students and faculty and now simply orders new controllers from Computrols.

Quote from the customer: “Recently we have been tuning our buildings using a variety of strategies. We were able to save $30,000 in electric and $16,000 in natural gas on last month’s bills without the occupants even knowing that the changes were being made.”
